Navigating injury this season with alternative racing options

Triathlon season is just about upon us, but for some athletes out there, injuries may be putting that first race of the year in jeopardy. We know that you’re eager to get back to racing triathlons, but there are many other options out there that you can pursue, many of which are still in the multi-sport world. Here are some options for triathlon alternatives to keep you entertained and motivated as the season kicks off.

Duathlon

If you’re dealing with an upper-body injury that is keeping you out of the pool and not allowing you to swim, a duathlon is a great race option. A lot of people who do duathlons will say things like, “Oh, I’m only doing the duathlon,” but in reality, the run-bike-run format is harder than triathlon’s swim-bike-run. Hop into a duathlon for a great challenge this spring or summer as you continue to rehab that injury.

Aquathlon

Perhaps you’re struggling with an injury that is preventing you from cycling. If that’s the case, an aquathlon is a great option for you. These races are either a swim-run-swim or simply swim-run format, and although they ditch the longest third of the triathlon, they are still very difficult. Aquathlon-specific events are also more low-key than regular triathlons, so you’ll be in for a much more chill time.

Aquabike

If it’s the run you have to avoid, an aquabike race might be the right choice. As the name suggests, this is a swim-bike race, and just like all of the other options on this list, it will be plenty of fun, as challenging as you want to make it, and something that can scratch that multi-sport itch of yours.

Stick to one

If you’re fine with skipping out on multi-sport events but still want to race in some capacity, consider picking one of the three sports of triathlon. Enter an open water swimming race, hop into the peloton in a road cycling event, or try your hand at a running competition on the road or track. Any of these options will help to keep you fit and motivated, so whenever you can make your return to triathlon, you’ll be ready to pick up where you left off.
